History Of The Caye
Thatch Caye formed over thousands of years as mangroves took root on a shallow sandbar within Belize’s Barrier Reef. In 1961, Hurricane Hattie split the larger Coco Plum Caye into three sections, creating the island known today as Thatch Caye.
In 2001, two American businessmen began a seven year project to expand and develop the island, which welcomed its first guests in December 2008. Muy’Ono Resorts acquired Thatch Caye in 2015 and worked with Belizean craftsmen to renovate accommodations, upgrade facilities, and strengthen erosion protection. Today, the island remains a unique retreat shaped by both natural forces and local craftsmanship.
